Tempe features many interesting places and historic buildings to visit.  While Tempe's first documented occupants were the Hohokam Native Americans, the current town as we know it today, dates back to the establishment of Fort McDowell in 1865 and the subsequent influx of settlers.  The town was not formally named until 1865, by "Lord" Darrell Duppa who named the area after the Vale of Tempe in Greece.  After the first railroad line came through Tempe in 1887, the community began a fast paced evolution, which continues to this day.  In 1894, the town of Tempe was incorporated.

Many of Tempe's historic buildings are located not too far from Rancho Las Palmas Apartments within the Mill Avenue area and the streets adjacent to Arizona State University, which is often referred to as Tempe's Mill Avenue District.  The area was originally the location of a flour mill and several other business ventures of Charles T. Hayden, one of Tempe's original settlers.

Today Tempe is still a rapid growing city with an eye to the future, as well as host to a variety of large companies, cultural centers and activities that may not be there if it were not for Tempe's number one draw, Arizona State University.  The rapid growth of ASU and the student population provide much of the current growth for the city of Tempe.
